We arrived in São Domingos de Benfica!
On April 20 we launched our 15th delivery point at Mercado de São Domingos de Benfica.
It will be open every Wednesday, from 5 pm to 9 pm, to receive more 350 consumers and to save more 1.5 tonnes of ugly fruits and vegetables.

Right On!
The price of the baskets has gone up since March 2020: the small basket is now €3.60, whereas previously it was €3.50 and the big basket rose from €7 to €7.20.
Until then, and since the start of Fruta Feia in November 2013, the price of the baskets remained unchanged. The reason for the increase was the arrival of COVID-19, which made us face extra costs, such as buying face masks, gloves and disinfectant gel. Today, after almost two years, these costs have become increasingly irrelevant compared with the other expenses that our co-op supports, yet the prices of the baskets have not returned to their original value. The reason for this is, after re-analyzing our business model, we saw that this value could be channeled to an increase in the price paid to farmers for the ugly fruits and vegetables we use for the baskets. We decided to do this, and we were also able to increase our salaries.
By ensuring an increase in the ammount we pay to our farmers for what they produce, we are consolidating the relevance of our role in the fight against food waste. Paying an amount that covers the cost of production is one thing, but wanting to go beyond that is assuming the proper meaning of one of Fruta Feia's most important objectives.
Raising the amount paid to farmers, increasing the wages of workers in the cooperative and maintaining the project's financial sustainability without losing the values that define us is a clear sign that we are moving in the right direction. Which is great, because we do this with pleasure!

Members of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste!
We've been fighting food waste due to appearance for 8 years. For this reason we were selected to integrate the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste of the European Commission, with a very clear proposal to rethink the European Regulation that dictates the standards for the commercialization of fruit and vegetables, .
This platform brings together different key actors from the public and private sectors in order to identify, measure, understand and find solutions to deal with food waste. You can learn more about the work of this Platform through this video.In our 5-year term (January 2022 to December 2026) we will put ugly fruits on the table and elevate our everyday struggle to a European debate. Always pursuing, hand in hand with the farmers, the objective of valuing the 30% of fruits and vegetables that are still wasted due to their appearance.

FRUTA FEIA WORKSHOPS FOR KIDS
We have already been to many schools, around 1400 children took these workshops with us.
They all tasted pretty fruit and ugly fruit without knowing which was which, and nobody could tell the difference because the taste is the same, after all!
These kids are now aware of the reasons for consuming local and seasonal. And they will fight for the ugly fruits and vegetables because they already know how much waste is worth!

8 YEARS OF FRUTA FEIA!
On November 18, 2013 we were loading our van for the first time with ugly fruits and vegetables that farmers couldn´t sell because supposedly no one wanted to eat.
And we presented ourselves to the world as the first solution to fight a very specific food waste - the one which results from the dictatorship of aesthetics imposed on farmers.
The objective that gave birth to Fruta Feia remains the same, but 8 years later, and after we redefined how to look at fruits and vegetables that were once rejected due to their appearance and inspired so many other projects, Fruta Feia is not just that.
It's a different way of doing things, which is difficult to summarize in a few words of a post on our website.
It's the affection that unites us to the farmers to whom we pay a fair value for the fruits of their labor; it's the weekly relationship with our consumers who buy local and seasonal products at a reduced price; it's our own joy and conviction who work on something we believe while having decent salaries; it's the arms of the volunteers who every week embrace the assembly of thousands of baskets with us. It is not only the environmental and social sustainability but also the economic sustainability of our co-op that allowed it to survive the pandemic. It was the construction and maintenance of a fairer economy that defines itself on a human scale. It's a lot!

On October 26 we launched our 14th delivery point in Marvila at Núcleo A70.
It will be open every Tuesday, from 5 pm to 9 pm, to receive more 300 consumers and to save more 1.5 tonnes of ugly fruits and vegetables!

New selling point in Arroios: Galeria Monumental!
The Association Núcleo A70, which has hosted us in Arroios in the past years, has moved to Marvila due to the selling of the building in Regueirão dos Anjos.
To keep Fruta Feia in the neighborhood, we had to look for a new home. That's how we arrived at Galeria Monumental, in Campo Mártires da Pátria, a space with 35 years of history that has welcomed a great diversity of cultural projects.
We will be there every Monday from 5pm to 9pm.
