For those who haven’t come across Público’s article yet, it is with great joy that we announce that Fruta Feia has won the 2nd award of the IOP contest on Social Entrepreneurship promoted by Gulbenkian.
This newsflash is essentially to say thank you to everyone who wrote us expressing their interest in Fruta Feia, which was crucial to make it a solid winning project:
Beautiful people eat ugly fruit!

Last preparations for the contest’s final
We’ve been working hard in the past few months. We went to the countryside, talked to managers of other projects in the agricultural sector, lost days working on numbers and costs on excel. Among many achievements, we’ve got Anjos’ Consumer Co-Op ready to be launched – 45 potential associated consumers, farmers from Bombarral and Mafra interested in supplying what’s considered waste, and a beautiful spot at Casa Independente able to weekly distribute our boxes to associated consumers.
We’re now arranging for the last preparations for Gulbenkian’s contest’s final, which will announce the winner of the competition.
Among the strengths of our project are the serious problem which we intend to solve, and the low-cost model we use for it. Food waste is an issue which people are increasingly aware of. The amount of e-mails we’ve been receiving to support us, the feedback of hope that farmers found in our project, and the quickness it took us to gather the necessary number of associated consumers for our pilot project of the Co-op in Anjos reveal the enormous social potential of the project. Through Fruta Feia, Portugal has the possibility of becoming a pioneer in implementing an answer to a problem that is denounced daily all across Europe.
We hope that Gulbenkian’s jury values the potential of this project and lets Fruta Feia win this contest!

Who buys ugly fruit?
To whoever hasn’t heard about it yet: Fruta Feia is one of the finalist projects of Gulbenkian’s contest! And to whoever’s forgotten about it, you can watch the video again here.
We’re now checking how many people would want to join to this project, to estimate the number of potential associated members and type of boxes, so as to optimize the system. What we’d like you to do is to write us (frutafeia@gmail.com) and let us know if you’d like to become an associated consumer and what box you would choose:
Small box - 3 Kg (2-3 people)
Medium box - 5 Kg (4-5 people)
Large box - 7,5 Kg (associations, offices, atliers, etc.)
The price will be cheaper than usual. The fruits and vegetables will come from local producers, may be formally inadequate, and will be from the season.
The main idea is that the consumer cooperative is an open place once a week at the end of the day, where associated members can pick up their boxes and chat with each other a little bit if they feel like it. Associated consumers don’t necessarily have to be individuals, they can be a group of people. We know that the localization is important. Initially we’ll be at Anjos, but the idea is to gradually expand to other neighbourhoods. If this spot is far away from your home but you still want to buy ugly fruit, sign up anyway and let us know the neighbourhood where you live.
The positive answer to this e-mail doesn’t imply any commitment yet, it’s only a manifestation of your interest in joining the Co-Op, which will help us calculating the numbers and optimizing the system. Also, it will be a plus to convince Gulbenkian’s jury.
Let us all eat ugly fruits and vegetables and put a stop to this unreasonable waste!

The project
The preference of major distributors for fruits and vegetables that are perfect in terms of shape, colour and size is one of the causes of the current food waste issue, which results in a waste of about 30% of what’s produced by farmers.
Fruta Feia aims mainly at channelling that part of the wasted production of fruits and vegetables to consumers who do not judge the quality by its appearance, thus saving this waste as well as the unnecessary use of recourses used in their production.
To this end, we shall constitute a Consumer Cooperative, which will kick-start with its pilot project in Lisbon, and whose delivery points will then be replicated throughout the country. Associated to Fruta Feia’s Co-Op, various awareness-raising campaigns will be developed on the issue of food waste, which in Portugal amounts up to one million tonnes per year.
